2014 – 2015 Concert Schedule

Raining Cats and Dogs

Sep 12, 2014

“Wow, it’s raining cats and dogs!” That usually means there’s a whole lot of rain. But for us, it means there’s a whole lot of music about cats and dogs – enough for an entire concert, in fact. Music for lions and tigers and The Waltzing Cat! Oh my! There’s a one-step called Me-Ow, a circus galop for lions in The Big Cage, and a rag about tigers. Music for hounds like Alfred Reed’s The Hounds of Spring and a Bird Dog, too. Come join with us as we musically celebrate these household pets and their cousins in the wild. This will be our first Concert Silly Prize concert of the season, so be sure to print and bring your ticket (with your name on the back) to be eligible. (If it’s rainy and wet, we’ll move the concert to the Cary Senior Center in Bond Park.) But we hope there is NOT a whole lot of water rain when it’s Raining Cats and Dogs.

Conductor’s Corner

Oct 24, 2014

Only one or two members of the Cary Town Band earn a living making music. But there are quite a few that, at one time or another, have actually conducted or have a strong desire to conduct a band in concert. We’ve asked every member who has ever conducted, or had such a desire, to select and prepare a piece for your mid-Fall enjoyment. Some will be recalling the joy of conducting from times past. A few may be experiencing the terror leading the band in public for the first time. There’s sure to be a wide variety of music selected, from overtures and short suites to marches, waltzes, and many other musical genres. There will also be a world premier of a new work by one of our members. Please join us as we showcase the musical selections and directing talents of our members and maybe a guest or two. It’s an event we call the Conductor’s Corner.

Veterans Luncheon

Veteran’s Day Celebration

Winterfest ’14

Dec 12, 2014

It’s December again, time to join our sixth annual musical celebration of the holiday season, Winterfest ’14. As requested, we’ll continue to have the very popular carol sing-along. We will again feature a few smaller ensembles of band members bringing you holiday favorites. There’ll be music to celebrate your favorite holiday festivities – Hanukkah, Winter Solstice, Christmas, maybe New Years, and of course, a Sleigh Ride or two. Come enjoy all your favorite holiday melodies at Winterfest ‘14.

Let’s Do Lunch

Feb 13, 2015

Ever heard the expression, “Let’s Do Lunch”? It’s frequently a polite brush off. But in this case, it’s a heartfelt invitation to join the band as we consume food – or at least music about food and the places where you can do that. In the Friendly Tavern, In a Persian Market, On the Mall, or on a Teddy Bear’s Picnic, there’s so much food (music) to be had – noodles, oranges, pickles, watermelon, and more. To spice it up, there’s sugar, salt and pepper, and beer. For dessert, we have pie and cake. And there’s music for all that. For a late-winter feast, come on now – Let’s Do Lunch!

Play With the Band

Mar 27, 2015

For this very special concert, we’re extending an invitation to young wind/percussion instrumental students with just a few years playing experience to sit in with the band for a series of rehearsals and a formal concert in the Cary Arts Center Theater – a “Play with the Adult Non-Pros” experience. We especially include those who take private lessons, are home schooled, or attend a school without a formal band. The music includes selections starting off with easier pieces and getting progressively more challenging. Local school music directors and private teachers can “nominate” students they feel are advanced enough to enjoy and grow from this experience. We will also entertain requests from parents with children they feel are ready for such a challenge. Who knows – perhaps some may be invited to participate with the band in future concerts. Come enjoy the talents of young musicians as they Play with the Band.

Concerts For A Cause

May 03, 2015

Amtrak Train Days 2015

May 09, 2015

May 09 is Amtrak Train Days 2015. Again this year the Cary Town Band is joining with the Heart of Cary Association in partnership with Amtrak and the Town of Cary in celebrating this event on-site at the Downtown Railroad Station. Come on down to the Amtrak Station and help celebrate National Train day. We’ll be looking for you.

From the British Empire

May 15, 2015

It’s time for a trip around the world with music From the British Empire, or at least the British empire of the 19th century. Of course there’s the Pomp and Circumstance of England, appropriate for this graduation time, and an English Folk Song Suite. How about Pryor’s Blue Bells of Scotland or an Irish Tune by Granger? We’ll visit the town of Invercargill in New Zealand and sing a song of Canada. We’ll march with Her Majesty’s Army and Royal Air Force, and perhaps meet Her Majesty, the Queen herself. So much great music from the empire’s composers and so little time to sample it all. But sample it we will. Come with us as we travel with music From the British Empire.

Memorial Day Remembrance

May 25, 2015

Join with the Town of Cary for the first annual Memorial Day Remembrance at the Veterans Freedom Park. There will be a patriotic ceremony, speakers from local organizations, and music by the Cary Town Band.

Academy St. Groundbreaking

May 28, 2015

You are invited to join the Town of Cary’s Town Council and staff as they break ground on the Academy Street revitalization project. They’ve organized a street party on Academy Street from Chatham to Dry. There’ll be music (including some by the Cary Town Band), games, food trucks (Arepa Culture, Chick Wagon and Parlez-vous Crêpe) and more. It’s free and we look forward to celebrating the Town’s signature street with you as we all embark on this very exciting project!

In Times of Peace

Jul 03, 2015

There are times of war; there are times of peace. A simple question: “What times are we in now?” There’s lots of music recalling times of war. Is there music celebrating times of peace or the wish for peace? Definitely, yes! As we prepare to celebrate our nation’s 239th birthday with the band’s 28th Annual Patriotic Celebration, join with us as we musically explore such times – the world Waiting for the Sunrise, A Prayer for Peace, an army that just disappeared (think Twilight Zone), and more. Former US Marine Dave Brook recalls his military experiences serving in a time of peace. And, of course, there’s the annual pre-4th of July salute to our military service personnel past and present who have helped secure our freedom and liberty. It’s a concert event you definitely will not want to miss. (And again this year, this concert is in the Cary Arts Center Theater, where it’s cool indoors and rain will not spoil the event!) Please join with us for a concert In Times of Peace.

Parade in the Park

Jul 04, 2015

Members of the band will lead this year’s “Parade in the Park”, a parade where kids are encouraged to decorate their bike, trike, stroller, wagon or stroller to show their American Pride. The parade moves from the entrance to the Kiwanis Shelter parking lot to the Boat House in Bond Park, where the decorated vehicles are judged. The Band’s performance is extremely informal, not so much marching as meandering along the route playing as they go. All selections are played “by ear”. There is no written music and the arrangements are entirely impromptu. This recalls the picture of a parade led by a fife and drum from years ago.

Summerfest 4th of July

Jul 04, 2015

The Cary Town Band, the North Carolina Symphony, and fireworks – what could make the 4th of July more perfect? Come join Summerfest 2015 for the annual 4th of July Celebration. The big event starts when the Cary Town Band brings you an old fashion play-in-the-park afternoon concert just like your great grandparents enjoyed a hundred years ago when they celebrated the 4th of July. Patriotic music, popular music, and more, while stretched out on a blanket on the grass. Come enjoy the fun with the band, the symphony, and culminating with the best fireworks display in the Triangle area. Don’t miss it!

39th Annual Lazy Daze Arts and Crafts Festival

Aug 22, 2015

Late August – the perfect time for the 39th Annual Lazy Daze Arts & Crafts Festival. And what better way to start the festival than with the Cary Town Band on the Main stage in the morning before the heat of the day. As you start enjoying all the activities, stop by to hear rousing marches, circus melodies, old-timey rags, a few kid’s songs, and maybe a waltz or two. It will have you tapping your toes and dancing off to see all there is to see at this year’s Lazy Daze Festival. We’ll see you there!
